Tripartite Struggle

The Tripartite Struggle was a series of conflicts among the Gurjara-Pratiharas, Palas, and Rashtrakutas for control of Kannauj, mainly from the eighth to tenth centuries.

Kannauj: A historic city in northern India, situated near the Ganges and a major political center in early medieval times. Its strategic location and prestige made control of the city the struggle’s central prize.
Harsha: A north Indian ruler who governed a large kingdom from Kannauj during the first half of the seventh century. His death left no enduring empire to command the northern political center.
Gurjara-Pratihara Empire: The north Indian empire built by the Gurjara-Pratiharas, with Kannauj as a principal center. Pratihara success in the struggle enabled a period of dominance in northern India.
Battle of Tarain: A series of late twelfth-century battles between forces led by Prithviraj Chauhan and Muhammad of Ghor. It was a later contest for northern power, fought between different rulers and armies.
