Tripedalism

Tripedalism is movement or support using three legs or limbs. It can describe an animal’s gait or a three-legged stance or mechanism.

Tripod gait: A locomotion pattern in which an animal alternates between two groups of three supporting legs. This named gait is a clear example of tripedal support during locomotion.
Insect locomotion: The ways insects move using their legs, wings, or other body structures. Many six-legged insects use alternating three-leg support during walking.
Bipedalism: Locomotion using two legs or limbs for support and movement. It uses two supporting limbs rather than three.
Tripod stance: A posture in which three limbs or supports contact the ground or another surface. It is the static counterpart to movement on three supporting limbs.
Static stability: The ability of a body to remain balanced without movement or active correction. Three contacts can define a stable support area when the load stays within it.
Hexapod gait: A walking pattern for six-legged animals or robots, often involving alternating tripod support. Its tripod sequence demonstrates tripedal support as part of a six-legged gait.
Quadrupedalism: Locomotion using four legs or limbs for support and movement. It adds a fourth limb, changing support patterns and available gaits.
Three-legged robot: A robot whose locomotion or support system uses three legs. Its design makes tripedal movement an explicit engineering problem.
Center of mass: The point representing the weighted average position of an object's mass. Its position relative to three supports helps determine whether a stance remains balanced.
Crab locomotion: Movement strategies used by crabs, including walking and sideways motion on multiple legs. Crabs may retain support on several legs while others move, illustrating multi-leg stability.
