Triple Intervention

The 1895 diplomatic intervention by Russia, France, and Germany that forced Japan to return the Liaodong Peninsula to China after the First Sino-Japanese War.

Treaty of Shimonoseki: The 1895 treaty that ended the First Sino-Japanese War and ceded Taiwan and the Liaodong Peninsula to Japan. Its transfer of Liaodong prompted the three powers to demand Japan’s withdrawal.
Russo-Japanese War: The 1904–1905 war between Russia and Japan over influence in Korea and Manchuria. The intervention intensified rivalry between Russia and Japan, which later erupted in war.
