Tronador

Tronador is a glaciated stratovolcano on the Argentina–Chile border in the southern Andes, rising to about 3,470 meters. Its name, meaning “thunderer,” recalls the sound of avalanches and icefalls.

Stratovolcano: A steep-sided volcano built from repeated layers of lava, ash, and other volcanic debris. Tronador’s cone belongs to this layered volcanic form.
Nahuel Huapi National Park: A protected area in Argentina’s Río Negro and Neuquén provinces, established in 1934. The Argentine side of Tronador lies within this national park.
Ventisquero Negro: A debris-covered glacier at the foot of Tronador in Argentina’s Nahuel Huapi National Park. Its dark surface records rockfall and sediment accumulating on mountain ice.
Nazca Plate: An oceanic tectonic plate beneath the eastern Pacific Ocean and western South America. Its subduction beneath South America drives volcanism along the Andes.
Volcanic monitoring: The systematic observation of volcanoes to detect unrest and assess hazards. Monitoring helps distinguish active volcanic signals from ordinary mountain processes.
Glacier: A persistent mass of land ice that moves under its own weight. Glaciers cover Tronador’s summit and shape its slopes.
Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park: A protected area in Chile’s Los Lagos Region, containing volcanoes, forests, and lakes. The Chilean side of Tronador borders this park’s mountain landscapes.
Manso Glacier: A glacier on Tronador whose meltwater feeds the Manso River system. It is among the major ice bodies draining the massif.
South American Plate: The tectonic plate carrying South America and parts of the surrounding Atlantic seafloor. Tronador’s volcanic setting lies above this overriding plate.
Volcanic dormancy: A period of relative quiet between episodes of volcanic activity. Tronador’s eruptive history and present state inform assessments of future activity.
