TRPV1

TRPV1 is a gene encoding a calcium-permeable ion channel activated by capsaicin, noxious heat, and several chemical signals. The channel helps sensory neurons detect painful stimuli.

Transient receptor potential channel: A family of ion channels that convert physical and chemical stimuli into electrical signals. TRPV1 is one member of this channel family, with sensitivity to heat and pungent chemicals.
Capsaicin cream: A topical medicine containing capsaicin, used to relieve some forms of chronic pain. Repeated exposure to capsaicin activates TRPV1 and can reduce pain signaling over time.
David Julius: An American physiologist whose research identified the capsaicin receptor and advanced molecular studies of pain and temperature. His laboratory identified TRPV1 by searching for the molecular target of capsaicin.
ThermoTRP channel: A temperature-sensitive member of the transient receptor potential channel family. TRPV1 helped establish thermoTRP channels as molecular temperature sensors.
