Tuareg rebellions

Tuareg rebellions are armed uprisings by Tuareg groups against governments in Mali and Niger, driven by disputes over political power, security, and control of northern territories.

Tuareg people: Amazigh-speaking peoples whose communities span the Sahara and Sahel, including parts of Mali, Niger, Algeria, Libya, and Burkina Faso. Tuareg communities' cross-border ties and distinct political histories shape the rebellions' constituencies.
First Tuareg rebellion: A Tuareg uprising against Mali's government from 1963 to 1964, centered in the country's northern regions. It was the first major post-independence Tuareg revolt in Mali.
Iyad Ag Ghaly: A Malian Tuareg political and armed-group leader who later founded the Islamist organization Ansar Dine. His roles in rebellions and later Islamist insurgency show how political alliances shifted.
Azawad: A name used by separatists for a territory in northern Mali, whose boundaries and political status are disputed. Separatist claims to Azawad framed demands for independence or self-rule.
Mali War: An ongoing armed conflict in Mali that escalated in 2012 and involved domestic and foreign forces and multiple armed groups. The 2012 Tuareg-led revolt helped trigger a broader war across Mali.

Tuareg rebellion (1990–1995): An armed uprising in Mali and Niger that began in 1990 and ended through separate peace agreements. It brought coordinated Tuareg insurgency and negotiations to both countries.
Mano Dayak: A Nigerien Tuareg leader and activist who became a prominent negotiator during the 1990s rebellion. He represented Tuareg demands in negotiations with Niger's government.
