Tunisian independence

Tunisian independence ended French protectorate rule and established the independent Kingdom of Tunisia on 20 March 1956. It followed a nationalist struggle combining political organizing, negotiation, and armed resistance.

French protectorate in Tunisia: A system of French rule over Tunisia established by the Treaty of Bardo in 1881 while retaining the bey as nominal sovereign. Its termination in 1956 was the central change independence brought.
Tunisian armed resistance: Armed opposition to French rule in Tunisia, including the fellagha insurgency of the 1950s. Insurgent pressure raised the costs of maintaining the protectorate.
