Turan Depression

The Turan Depression is a vast low-lying region of Central Asia spanning parts of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. It includes deserts and basins whose rivers drain inland rather than reaching an ocean.

Karakum Desert: A large sandy desert in Turkmenistan, formed in the arid lowlands of Central Asia. It occupies much of the depression’s southern interior.
Endorheic basin: A drainage basin whose waters do not flow to an ocean. The depression’s rivers terminate in inland lakes, wetlands, and desert sinks.
Irrigation: The artificial application of water to land to support crop growth. Large irrigation networks draw on rivers crossing the depression’s arid terrain.
Tethys Ocean: A vast Mesozoic ocean that lay between the northern continents and Gondwana. Ancient marine settings contributed sediments to the region’s geological foundations.
Desertification: Land degradation in arid and semiarid regions that reduces biological productivity and resilience. Water stress and land-use pressures can intensify degradation across the lowlands.
Kyzylkum Desert: A desert between the Amu Darya and Syr Darya rivers, mainly in Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. It covers a broad central part of the depression.
Aridity: A climatic condition in which precipitation is too low to meet substantial evaporative demand. Low rainfall and strong evaporation sustain the region’s deserts and saline landscapes.
Aral Sea disaster: The rapid shrinkage of the Aral Sea following large-scale diversion of its tributary rivers for irrigation. River withdrawals in the depression transformed its central inland-water system.
Paratethys: A system of inland seas that developed across Eurasia as the Tethys Ocean changed during the Cenozoic. Its changing waters shaped the sedimentary history of the wider Turan region.
Salinization: The accumulation of soluble salts in soil or water to harmful levels. Irrigation and intense evaporation can leave salts in agricultural soils and drainage waters.
