Turbine blade

A shaped component that redirects or accelerates fluid flow to transfer energy to a turbine rotor. Blades may be fixed as stationary vanes or attached to a rotating wheel.

Blade cascade: A row of airfoil-shaped blades that guides fluid through a turbomachine. Neighboring blades form passages that turn and accelerate flow through a turbine stage.
Airfoil: A cross-sectional shape designed to control the flow of air or another fluid. Turbine blades use airfoil sections to turn flow while limiting losses.
Steam turbine: A rotary engine that extracts work from expanding steam. Its blades handle steam across stages with changing pressure and volume.
Creep: The slow, permanent deformation of a material under sustained stress, especially at high temperature. Hot turbine blades can elongate under centrifugal stress during long service.
Single-crystal superalloy: A high-temperature alloy component made without grain boundaries across its crystal structure. Single-crystal alloys resist creep in the hottest gas-turbine blade regions.
Velocity triangle: A vector diagram relating fluid velocity, blade speed, and relative flow velocity in a turbomachine. It shows how blade motion changes the fluid’s direction and energy.
Leading edge: The front edge of a body that first meets an oncoming flow. Its curvature governs how smoothly fluid enters a turbine blade passage.
Gas turbine: A rotary engine that compresses air, burns fuel, and extracts work from hot gas. Its turbine blades endure high temperatures and high rotational speeds.
Thermal barrier coating: A heat-resistant ceramic layer applied to components exposed to high temperatures. The coating lowers the temperature experienced by a gas-turbine blade’s metal.
Additive manufacturing: A family of processes that builds objects layer by layer from digital designs. It may enable intricate blade cooling passages and consolidate complex parts.
