Turbojet

A turbojet is an air-breathing jet engine that compresses incoming air, burns fuel in it, and produces thrust mainly by accelerating exhaust through a nozzle.

Axial compressor: A compressor that raises air pressure by passing it through successive rotating and stationary blade rows. Its stages compress incoming air before combustion.
Newton's laws of motion: Three principles describing how forces change motion and how interacting bodies exert equal and opposite forces. The engine's thrust follows from momentum transfer described by these laws.
Turbofan: A gas-turbine jet engine whose fan accelerates both bypass air and core flow. Its bypass stream usually improves propulsive efficiency at subsonic speeds.
Junkers Jumo 004: A German axial-flow turbojet that powered the Messerschmitt Me 262 during the Second World War. It was the first turbojet produced in quantity for operational aircraft.
Frank Whittle: A British engineer and Royal Air Force officer who developed an early practical turbojet design. His patented engine concept preceded the first British turbojet-powered flight.
Combustion chamber: An engine section where fuel burns in compressed air, adding heat while keeping pressure loss limited. It adds energy to the compressor's airflow before the turbine.
Momentum: A measure of motion equal to an object's mass multiplied by its velocity. Exhaust momentum changes account for much of the engine's thrust.
Turboprop: A gas-turbine engine that drives a propeller to produce most of its thrust. It extracts more turbine power for a propeller rather than a high-speed exhaust jet.
Whittle W.2: A British centrifugal-flow turbojet developed by Frank Whittle's Power Jets company. Its development helped establish the turbojet as a practical aircraft propulsion system.
Hans von Ohain: A German engineer who developed the turbojet that powered the Heinkel He 178. His engine powered the first aircraft to fly using a turbojet.
