Turkic peoples

Turkic peoples are diverse communities whose languages belong to the Turkic language family. They include Turks, Azerbaijanis, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Uyghurs, and many other peoples across Eurasia.

Turkic languages: A language family spoken across parts of Eurasia, including Turkish, Azerbaijani, Uzbek, Kazakh, and Uyghur. Shared languages are the clearest basis for grouping these distinct peoples.
Proto-Turkic language: The reconstructed ancestor of the Turkic languages, inferred by comparing their shared features. It represents the linguistic ancestry shared by the family’s later branches.
Turks: An ethnic group primarily associated with Turkey and the Turkish language. They are the largest population associated with the modern Turkish national identity.
Ottoman Empire: A multiethnic empire founded in Anatolia that ruled parts of southeastern Europe, western Asia, and North Africa. Its long rule shaped Turkish history and influenced neighboring Turkic communities.
Turkic peoples of Eurasia: The communities speaking Turkic languages across a broad belt from southeastern Europe to northeastern Asia. Their geographic spread shows how far the shared linguistic family extends.
Göktürks: A Turkic empire that ruled much of Inner Asia during the sixth and seventh centuries. Their inscriptions provide among the earliest substantial written evidence of Turkic language and political identity.
Azerbaijanis: A Turkic-speaking people primarily associated with Azerbaijan and northwestern Iran. Their history spans modern state borders and distinct regional traditions.
Seljuk Empire: A medieval empire founded by Oghuz Turkic rulers that expanded across western and central Asia. Its expansion helped establish Turkic political power across much of the Middle East.
Ethnolinguistic group: A population connected by both a shared language and a sense of cultural or ethnic belonging. The category helps distinguish linguistic relationship from a single political identity.
Orkhon inscriptions: Eighth-century Old Turkic monuments in Mongolia, commissioned by rulers of the Second Turkic Khaganate. Their texts document early Turkic political language and historical memory.
