Turkification of Anatolia

The gradual spread of Turkic languages and populations across Anatolia from the medieval period onward, through migration, political rule, conversion, and language shift.

Battle of Manzikert: A 1071 battle in which Seljuk forces defeated the Byzantine army in eastern Anatolia. The Byzantine defeat weakened imperial control and opened new routes for Turkic migration.
Seljuk Empire: A medieval Sunni Muslim empire ruled by a Turkic dynasty, spanning parts of Central Asia, Iran, and the Middle East. Seljuk expansion established the political setting for Turkic settlement in Anatolia.
Turkic languages: A language family spoken across a broad area from northeastern Siberia to southeastern Europe. Anatolian Turkish belongs to this family, whose spread is central to the concept.
Ottoman Empire: A state founded in northwestern Anatolia that grew into a multiethnic empire spanning parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa. Ottoman rule extended Turkish-speaking institutions while governing a diverse population.
Turkmen migration: The movement of Oghuz Turkic groups from Central Asia and Iran into the Middle East and Anatolia. Mobile Turkmen groups brought Turkic speech and pastoral lifeways into Anatolia.
Sultanate of Rum: A Seljuk state in Anatolia that flourished from the late eleventh century until the thirteenth century. Its institutions and towns consolidated Turkic rule in central Anatolia.
Turkish language: A Turkic language spoken chiefly in Turkey and Cyprus, with communities elsewhere. Its establishment as Anatolia’s dominant language is a principal outcome of Turkification.
Turkish War of Independence: The 1919–1923 conflict that established the Republic of Turkey after the Ottoman Empire’s defeat in World War I. The republic turned a long history of Turkic settlement into a modern national-state project.
Anatolian beyliks: Turkic principalities that arose in Anatolia after Seljuk political authority weakened in the thirteenth century. Their local rule extended Turkic-speaking political and social networks across the peninsula.
Oghuz Turks: A major grouping of Turkic peoples from which many later Turkic-speaking communities, including Turks, descend. Oghuz migrations supplied many of the populations associated with Anatolia’s Turkification.
