Twelve Imams

The Twelve Imams are the spiritual and political successors whom Twelver Shia Muslims recognize as leaders of the Muslim community after Muhammad. Twelver belief holds that the final Imam entered occultation and will return.

Twelver Shia Islam: The largest branch of Shia Islam, whose adherents recognize twelve divinely designated Imams. The Twelve Imams are the defining line of religious authority in this branch.
Nass (Islamic concept): An explicit designation of a successor, especially in Shia accounts of the Imams’ appointment. Twelver accounts describe each Imam as designating the next.
Ghadir Khumm: A site where Muhammad delivered a sermon that Shia tradition interprets as appointing Ali as successor. Its reported declaration is central to Shia accounts of Ali’s designation.
Husayn ibn Ali: The third Imam in Twelver Shiism, killed at Karbala in 680 while resisting the Umayyad caliph Yazid. His martyrdom became a central model of resistance and sacrifice.
Ashura: The tenth day of Muharram, commemorated by Shia Muslims as the day Husayn was killed at Karbala. Its annual observance keeps the third Imam’s martyrdom central to communal life.
Imamate in Shia Islam: The Shia doctrine that divinely appointed leaders guide the Muslim community after Muhammad. It explains why the Imams are understood as more than political successors.
Ismah: The doctrine that certain prophets and religious leaders are protected from sin and error. The Imams’ infallibility grounds their authority as guides to religious truth.
Battle of Karbala: The 680 battle in which Husayn ibn Ali and his small group were killed by Umayyad forces. Husayn’s death shaped the memory and moral authority of the Imams’ line.
Zayn al-Abidin: The fourth Imam in Twelver Shiism, known for devotional works and surviving the aftermath of Karbala. His prayers and teachings carried the line forward after the massacre.
Arba'een: A Shia observance held forty days after Ashura, associated with pilgrimage to Husayn’s shrine in Karbala. It extends the remembrance of Husayn and draws millions to his shrine.
