Tycho Brahe

Tycho Brahe (1546–1601) was a Danish astronomer whose exceptionally precise observations of the planets enabled Johannes Kepler to derive the laws of planetary motion.

Johannes Kepler: A German astronomer and mathematician who formulated three laws describing planetary motion. Kepler used Brahe’s observations of Mars to derive the first two laws of planetary motion.
Quadrant: An astronomical instrument with a quarter-circle scale used to measure the altitude of celestial objects. Large quadrants let Brahe measure stellar and planetary positions with fine angular precision.
Kepler's laws of planetary motion: Three mathematical rules describing planetary orbits, speeds, and periods around the Sun. Kepler extracted these laws from the planetary positions Brahe had recorded.
Tychonic system: A planetary model in which the Sun orbits a stationary Earth while the other planets orbit the Sun. Brahe’s own system preserved a stationary Earth while incorporating the observed order of the planets.
Frederick II of Denmark: King of Denmark and Norway from 1559 to 1588, who supported astronomy at Uraniborg. His patronage funded Brahe’s island observatory and sustained decades of observations.
Mural quadrant: A fixed quadrant mounted against a wall and aligned with the meridian to measure celestial altitudes. Brahe used large, fixed mural quadrants to make repeatable meridian observations.
Rudolphine Tables: Astronomical tables published by Johannes Kepler in 1627, based on Brahe’s observations and Kepler’s planetary theory. The tables converted Brahe’s measurements into far more accurate predictions of planetary positions.
Copernican heliocentrism: The astronomical model in which Earth and the other planets orbit the Sun. Brahe accepted planetary motion around the Sun but rejected the claim that Earth itself moves.
Uraniborg: An observatory and research complex built by Tycho Brahe on the Danish island of Hven. Brahe’s royal grant made this purpose-built center of observation possible.
Armillary sphere: A model of the celestial sphere made from rings representing astronomical circles. Brahe used an armillary instrument to measure positions along the ecliptic.
