Tychonic system

A geoheliocentric model in which the Sun and Moon orbit a stationary Earth while the other planets orbit the Sun. It reproduces many predictions of the Copernican system without requiring Earth to move.

Tycho Brahe's world system: The cosmological arrangement Tycho Brahe proposed, with the planets orbiting the Sun and the Sun orbiting Earth. This is the specific orbital structure that defines the Tychonic system.
Tycho Brahe: A Danish astronomer whose precise naked-eye observations reshaped late-sixteenth-century astronomy. He proposed the system and supplied the observations behind its planetary tables.
Ptolemaic system: An Earth-centered astronomical model using circles and epicycles to represent celestial motions. Unlike the Tychonic system, it places the Sun and every planet in orbit around Earth.
Rudolphine Tables: Astronomical tables published by Johannes Kepler in 1627 using Tycho Brahe's observations and Kepler's planetary theory. Brahe's data outlasted his cosmology and enabled more accurate planetary predictions.
Geocentric model: A family of astronomical models placing Earth at the center of the cosmos. The Tychonic system retains geocentrism for the Sun, Moon, and Earth's position.
De mundi aetherei recentioribus phaenomenis: Tycho Brahe's 1588 book on the 1577 comet and the structure of the heavens. It contains Brahe's published presentation of his geoheliocentric arrangement.
Keplerian astronomy: The planetary theory in which planets move around the Sun in elliptical orbits described by Kepler's laws. It replaced both circular Tychonic paths and the need to keep Earth stationary.
Johannes Kepler: A German astronomer who formulated laws describing planets' elliptical orbits around the Sun. He inherited Brahe's observations and used them to develop a different system.
Copernican heliocentrism: The model that places the Sun near the center and makes Earth one of the orbiting planets. It shares the Tychonic system's planetary layout but makes Earth move.
1577 Great Comet: A bright comet observed across Europe in 1577, found to travel beyond the Moon's orbit. Its path challenged solid celestial spheres and formed part of Brahe's case for reform.
