Tyne and Wear

Tyne and Wear is a metropolitan and ceremonial county in northeast England. It comprises five metropolitan boroughs: Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Gateshead, North Tyneside, and South Tyneside.

Newcastle upon Tyne: A city in northeast England and the administrative centre of Tyne and Wear. One of the county’s five boroughs, on the north bank of the River Tyne.
Local Government Act 1972: A British statute that reorganized local government in England and Wales from 1974. It established Tyne and Wear as a metropolitan county.
Tyne and Wear Metro: An urban rail system serving Newcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, North Tyneside, and South Tyneside. It connects settlements across borough boundaries in the county.
Northumberland: A county in northeast England bordering Tyne and Wear to the north and west. It is a neighboring county, not one of Tyne and Wear’s constituent boroughs.
Sunderland: A city in northeast England and a metropolitan borough of Tyne and Wear. The county’s largest settlement by area, on the coast and River Wear.
Metropolitan county: A county-level administrative area in England created to coordinate government across a large urban region. Tyne and Wear was created as one of England’s metropolitan counties.
North East Combined Authority: A regional authority coordinating strategic functions across local-government areas in northeast England. Its region-wide remit includes the boroughs of Tyne and Wear.
County Durham: A county in northeast England bordering Tyne and Wear to the south and west. It is geographically adjacent but administratively separate from Tyne and Wear.
Gateshead: A town and metropolitan borough in northeast England, opposite Newcastle across the River Tyne. A constituent borough whose urban area is closely linked to Newcastle.
Tyne and Wear County Council: The county-level council that governed Tyne and Wear from 1974 until its abolition in 1986. It initially administered services across the five boroughs.
