Type species

A type species permanently anchors the scientific name of a genus or subgenus under biological nomenclature. It fixes the name’s application, not the genus’s defining traits or membership.

Type genus: The genus that anchors the scientific name of a family-group taxon. It applies the same name-bearing principle one rank above genera.
Biological nomenclature: The formal system of assigning and regulating scientific names for organisms. Type species operates within this wider system of regulated names.
Nomenclatural type: The name-bearing reference that fixes the application of a scientific taxon name. A type species is the nomenclatural type used for genus-group names.
