Tyrol

Tyrol is an Austrian federal state in the Alps, east of Vorarlberg. Its capital is Innsbruck, and its territory is divided into North Tyrol and the geographically separate East Tyrol.

Innsbruck: Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol and a city in the Inn valley of the Austrian Alps. The state capital anchors Tyrol’s government, transport, and urban life.
County of Tyrol: The County of Tyrol was a historical territory in the Alps centered on the region around Merano and Innsbruck. The modern state takes its name and much of its historical identity from this territory.
Brenner Pass: The Brenner Pass is a low Alpine pass connecting Austria’s Inn valley with Italy’s South Tyrol. It makes Tyrol a major north–south route across the Alps.
Andreas Hofer: Andreas Hofer was a Tyrolean innkeeper and military leader who led resistance to Bavarian and French rule in 1809. His revolt made him a lasting symbol of Tyrolean resistance and regional identity.
Salzburg (state): Salzburg is an Austrian federal state east of Tyrol, named for its capital city. It separates North Tyrol from East Tyrol and borders Tyrol to the east.
North Tyrol: North Tyrol is the larger part of Tyrol, separated from East Tyrol by Salzburg and South Tyrol. Most of the state lies here, north of the Alpine watershed.
House of Habsburg: The House of Habsburg was a European ruling dynasty that governed Austria and many other territories. Habsburg rule shaped Tyrol’s place within the Austrian lands for centuries.
Brenner Base Tunnel: The Brenner Base Tunnel is a railway tunnel under construction between Austria and Italy beneath the Brenner Pass. The project aims to shift cross-Alpine freight and passenger traffic from road to rail.
Margarete Maultasch: Margarete Maultasch was a medieval ruler of Tyrol who governed the county in the fourteenth century. Her reign belongs to the county’s formative medieval history.
Carinthia: Carinthia is an Austrian federal state south of Salzburg and east of East Tyrol. Its border with East Tyrol distinguishes the state’s eastern Alpine setting from North Tyrol.
