Ub Iwerks

Ub Iwerks (1901–1971) was an American animator and special-effects artist who co-created Mickey Mouse with Walt Disney and developed distinctive animation techniques.

Walt Disney: An American animator, producer, and entrepreneur who co-founded the Disney studio and helped create its defining characters and films. Disney was Iwerks’s close creative partner and the studio’s public face.
Hand-drawn animation: Animation made by drawing successive images, traditionally on paper or transparent cels, to create movement. Iwerks’s rapid drawing and distinctive character motion grew from this frame-by-frame practice.
Les Clark: An American animator and one of Disney’s Nine Old Men, known for animating Mickey Mouse and directing animated films. Clark joined the animation department under Iwerks and became a leading Disney animator.
The Skeleton Dance: A 1929 Silly Symphony short in which dancing skeletons perform in a moonlit graveyard. Iwerks directed and animated this early showcase of expressive movement and musical timing.
Academy Award for Technical Achievement: An Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award recognizing technical achievements that advance filmmaking. Iwerks received recognition for technical innovations, including adaptations of xerography for animation.
Disney Brothers Studio: The animation studio founded by Walt and Roy Disney in 1923, later known as Walt Disney Productions. Iwerks joined the studio in its early years and helped establish its animation work.
Multiplane camera: A motion-picture camera system that photographs artwork arranged on multiple depth-separated planes to create parallax. Iwerks helped develop and refine Disney’s camera system for layered depth in animated films.
Roy O. Disney: An American businessman who co-founded the Disney studio with his brother Walt and managed its finances. Roy’s business role framed the studio conditions in which Iwerks worked.
Flip the Frog: A cartoon frog character starring in a series of theatrical shorts made by Ub Iwerks’s studio in the 1930s. The series was Iwerks’s principal independent creation after his departure from Disney.
Xerographic animation: An animation process that uses electrostatic copying to transfer artists’ drawings directly onto cels. Iwerks’s adaptation eliminated labor-intensive inking and changed Disney feature production.
