UFO religion

A religious movement that incorporates beliefs about extraterrestrial beings, unidentified flying objects, or contact between humans and nonhuman intelligences.

Raëlism: A movement founded by Claude Vorilhon that teaches humanity was created by extraterrestrial beings called the Elohim. It presents extraterrestrial creators as the foundation of a modern religious movement.
UFO contactee: A person who claims to have communicated with occupants of an unidentified flying object. Contactees often provide the revelations on which UFO religious teachings depend.
Kenneth Arnold UFO sighting: A 1947 report by pilot Kenneth Arnold of strange objects flying near Mount Rainier, which helped popularize the term flying saucer. Its publicity helped establish the postwar flying-saucer phenomenon from which contact narratives grew.
UFO conspiracy theory: A belief that governments or other powerful institutions conceal evidence about unidentified flying objects or extraterrestrial visitors. It can share UFO claims with religious movements while explaining them through secrecy rather than spiritual revelation.
Heaven's Gate: A new religious movement whose members believed they could reach an advanced extraterrestrial kingdom by leaving their human bodies. Its teachings joined spacecraft expectations to a distinctive account of salvation and death.
Channeling: A claimed process in which a person communicates messages from a spirit or other nonhuman intelligence. Channelled messages can make extraterrestrial teachings appear as ongoing revelation.
George Adamski: An American author and UFO contactee who claimed encounters with benevolent visitors from other planets. His popular contact stories helped shape early religious interpretations of space visitors.
Ufology: The study of reports and evidence concerning unidentified flying objects. Ufology investigates UFO reports without necessarily making them part of a religious worldview.
Aetherius Society: A religious movement founded by George King that teaches of advanced beings from other planets and spiritual planes. It combines contact claims with organized worship, prayer, and spiritual practice.
Cosmic salvation: A religious hope for deliverance or transformation through forces, beings, or events imagined on a cosmic scale. Many UFO religions recast salvation as humanity's rescue or evolution among the stars.
