Uinta Mountains

The Uinta Mountains are an east–west-trending range in northeastern Utah and northwestern Colorado. Their high peaks and glacially carved valleys include Utah’s highest summit, Kings Peak.

Kings Peak: At 13,528 feet, Kings Peak is Utah’s highest mountain and the highest point in the Uinta Mountains. Its summit marks the range’s highest elevation and Utah’s state high point.
Laramide orogeny: The Laramide orogeny was a prolonged mountain-building episode that raised the Rocky Mountains and adjoining uplifts in western North America. It produced the major uplift that shaped the Uinta region.
Continental Divide: The Continental Divide is the watershed boundary separating rivers that flow toward the Pacific Ocean from those that flow toward the Atlantic. It crosses the eastern Uintas and separates major drainage basins.
High Uintas Wilderness: High Uintas Wilderness is a protected area in Utah’s Uinta Mountains, encompassing much of their high alpine country. Its wilderness designation limits development in the range’s central high country.
Rocky Mountains: The Rocky Mountains are a major mountain system extending from western Canada through the western United States. The Uintas are a distinctive range within the Rocky Mountain system.
Mirror Lake: Mirror Lake is a high-elevation lake beside the Mirror Lake Highway in Utah’s western Uinta Mountains. It is a familiar access point to alpine scenery and nearby hiking trails.
Uinta uplift: The Uinta uplift is a broad, east–west-trending geological structure that raises ancient rocks in the Uinta Mountains. This uplift accounts for the range’s distinctive east–west axis.
Green River: The Green River is a major tributary of the Colorado River, flowing through Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. It drains the southern Uinta slopes and cuts through the range’s eastern end.
Ashley National Forest: Ashley National Forest is a federally managed forest in northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming, including much of the eastern Uintas. It administers a large share of the range’s eastern public lands.
Wasatch Range: The Wasatch Range is a north–south mountain range in northern Utah and southeastern Idaho. It lies west of the Uintas and forms part of Utah’s major mountain landscape.
