Knowra Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic A constituent republic of the Soviet Union, established in 1919 and dissolved in 1991. Its territory and institutions formed the principal predecessor of modern Ukraine.
Ukrainian War of Independence : A series of conflicts from 1917 to 1921 over control and independence of Ukrainian lands. The republic emerged from the struggle among Ukrainian, Bolshevik, and other forces for control of Ukraine.
Communist Party of Ukraine : The republican organization of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, which directed political life in Soviet Ukraine. It held effective governing authority above the republic’s formal state institutions.
Deportation of the Crimean Tatars : The Soviet mass deportation of Crimean Tatars from Crimea in 1944, carried out by the NKVD. The removal reshaped Crimea’s population, which was transferred to the Ukrainian SSR in 1954.

West Ukrainian People's Republic : A Ukrainian state proclaimed in 1918 in former Austro-Hungarian lands, which briefly united with the Ukrainian People's Republic. Its western state-building project competed with Soviet power in Ukrainian territories.
Treaty of Riga : A 1921 treaty ending the Polish–Soviet War and dividing contested territories between Poland and Soviet Russia. It fixed a western boundary and left Ukrainian lands divided between states.
Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR : The Ukrainian SSR’s executive and administrative government, subordinate to the Communist Party and Soviet constitutional order. It administered economic and public policy within the republic’s assigned powers.
