Ulbricht Doctrine

The German Democratic Republic’s policy of seeking full diplomatic recognition and opposing the Federal Republic of Germany’s claim to represent all Germans. It was named for East German leader Walter Ulbricht.

Hallstein Doctrine: West Germany’s policy of treating diplomatic recognition of East Germany by other states as an unfriendly act. It was the opposing policy that the GDR sought to undermine through recognition campaigns.

United Nations: An international organization founded in 1945 to maintain peace, promote cooperation, and address global issues. Both German states joined in 1973, confirming their separate international membership.
German Democratic Republic: The socialist state in eastern Germany from 1949 until its accession to the Federal Republic in 1990. The doctrine expressed this state’s effort to secure recognition as a sovereign country.
German reunification: The process that ended Germany’s postwar division with the reunification of the GDR and Federal Republic in 1990. The doctrine arose from the unresolved division it sought to define diplomatically.
Soviet Union: A federal socialist state that existed from 1922 to 1991 and was led by the Communist Party. Soviet support helped the GDR pursue recognition as a sovereign state.
