Ulrich Beck

Ulrich Beck (1944–2015) was a German sociologist who developed the concept of the risk society and studied reflexive modernization, individualization, and globalization.

Risk society: A society increasingly organized around anticipating and distributing risks produced by modernization. Beck’s signature concept describes how industrial progress creates hazards that shape politics and everyday life.
Chernobyl disaster: The 1986 nuclear power plant accident in Soviet Ukraine that released radioactive material across Europe. Beck treated Chernobyl as a stark example of industrial risks escaping national boundaries and ordinary control.
