Knowra Ultimate Frisbee Ultimate Frisbee Ultimate Frisbee is a noncontact team sport in which players pass a flying disc to score by catching it in the opposing team’s end zone. Players cannot run while holding the disc, and the sport is governed by the Spirit of the Game.
Flying Disc : A lightweight aerodynamic disc designed to fly when thrown with spin. Its lift and stability make passing, catching, and long throws possible.
Ultimate Field : The rectangular playing area for ultimate, divided into a central playing field and two end zones. Its boundaries and end zones determine where play happens and points are scored.
Joel Silver : An American film producer who helped establish organized ultimate at Columbia High School in New Jersey. Silver and classmates developed the school’s early game in the late 1960s.
Beach Ultimate : A version of ultimate played on sand, typically with smaller teams and a smaller field. It adapts the same passing-and-scoring game to beach conditions.
Rugby Union : A team sport in which players carry, pass, and kick an oval ball to score. Both sports use end zones, but rugby permits carrying the ball and controlled contact.
Backhand Throw : A disc throw made by swinging the arm across the body with the back of the hand leading. It is a basic way to move the disc around a defender.
Traveling (Ultimate) : A violation in ultimate in which a player holding the disc moves illegally, such as taking extra steps after catching it. The pivot rule lets players reposition for a throw without running with the disc.
Columbia High School Ultimate Team : A student team at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, associated with ultimate’s early development. Its students helped turn a schoolyard activity into an organized sport.
Indoor Ultimate : A version of ultimate played indoors, often on a smaller court with modified rules. Indoor play preserves disc passing when weather or facilities limit outdoor games.
American Football : A contact team sport in which teams advance an oval ball to score in end zones. Its end-zone scoring resembles ultimate’s, while its play uses contact and running with the ball.
