Ultramontanism

Ultramontanism is a Catholic movement that emphasizes the pope’s supreme authority and leadership over national churches and secular governments. It favors centralized church governance under the papacy.

Gallicanism: A French Catholic tradition asserting substantial autonomy for the church in France from papal authority. It embodies the national-church autonomy that ultramontanists opposed.
Papal supremacy: The doctrine that the pope holds supreme authority over the Catholic Church. It is the central authority claim that defines ultramontanism.
Pope Pius IX: The pope from 1846 to 1878, whose pontificate included the First Vatican Council and the definition of papal infallibility. His long pontificate made him the leading papal figure associated with ultramontane ascendancy.
