Umar ibn al-Khattab

Umar ibn al-Khattab was the second caliph of the Rashidun Caliphate, ruling from 634 to 644. His reign saw rapid expansion into territories of the Byzantine and Sasanian empires and the development of early Islamic institutions.

Rashidun Caliphate: The first caliphate, ruled by Muhammad’s successors from 632 to 661. Umar’s reign was the second period of this early Islamic state.
Quraysh: A group of Arab clans that dominated Mecca and controlled the Kaaba before Islam. Umar belonged to the Banu Adi clan of Quraysh.
Ali: The cousin and son-in-law of Muhammad, the fourth caliph in Sunni tradition, and the first imam in Shia Islam. Ali was a prominent member of Umar’s consultative circle and later succeeded him as caliph.
Islamic calendar: A lunar calendar whose year count begins with the Hijra in 622. Tradition credits Umar’s administration with formalizing the calendar’s use.
Rashidun: The Sunni designation for the first four caliphs, regarded as rightly guided rulers. This Sunni framework presents Umar as the second of four rightly guided caliphs.
Conquest of Persia: The series of campaigns that brought much of the Sasanian Empire under Muslim rule in the seventh century. Umar’s armies conquered the Sasanian heartlands during his reign.
Conversion to Islam: The adoption of Islam as a religious faith and community affiliation. Umar’s conversion became a defining turning point in accounts of his early life.
Uthman: The third caliph, who ruled from 644 to 656 and oversaw the standardization of the Quranic text. Uthman succeeded Umar after the council he appointed selected a new caliph.
Battle of Yarmouk: A battle in 636 in which Muslim forces defeated the Byzantine army in the Levant. The victory opened much of the Levant to the caliphate during Umar’s reign.
Imamate in Shia Islam: The Shia doctrine that legitimate leadership of the Muslim community belongs to divinely designated imams from Muhammad’s family. Its account of legitimate leadership differs from the caliphal succession Umar embodied.
