Umayyad Caliphate

The Umayyad Caliphate was an Islamic empire ruled by the Umayyad dynasty from 661 to 750, with its capital at Damascus. It expanded from the Iberian Peninsula to Central Asia.

Muawiya I: The first Umayyad caliph, who ruled from 661 to 680 and established dynastic succession. His accession founded the dynasty and shifted the caliphate's center to Damascus.
First Fitna: The first Muslim civil war, fought from 656 to 661 over leadership of the early Islamic community. Its final phase ended with Muawiya's victory and the establishment of Umayyad rule.
Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan: The Umayyad caliph who ruled from 685 to 705 and consolidated the dynasty after civil war. His reforms restored central authority and gave the empire durable administrative forms.
Umayyad conquest of Hispania: The Muslim conquest of most of the Iberian Peninsula, beginning in 711 under Umayyad authority. It carried Umayyad rule across the Strait of Gibraltar into Europe.
Damascus: A city in present-day Syria and one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities. It served as the Umayyad capital and administrative center.
Battle of Siffin: An inconclusive battle in 657 between forces of Caliph Ali and Muawiya ibn Abi Sufyan. Its aftermath deepened the conflict from which Muawiya emerged as caliph.
Al-Walid I: An Umayyad caliph who ruled from 705 to 715 during major territorial expansion and building projects. His reign marked the dynasty's greatest phase of expansion.
Umayyad conquest of Transoxiana: The early Islamic expansion into Transoxiana, the region beyond the Oxus River in Central Asia. Campaigns under the Umayyads extended caliphal power into Central Asia.
Diwan: An administrative bureau or register used by Islamic governments, including for taxation and military pay. Provincial revenues and soldiers were managed through bureaucratic institutions such as the diwan.
Hasan ibn Ali: The grandson of Muhammad and son of Ali who briefly held the caliphate in 661. His abdication agreement with Muawiya helped end the First Fitna.
