UMNO

The United Malays National Organisation is a Malaysian political party founded in 1946. It led Malaysia’s governing coalition for most of the period from independence in 1957 to 2018.

Malayan Union: A British-administered political union established in 1946 that proposed centralized rule and common citizenship in Malaya. Opposition to the union prompted Malay leaders to establish UMNO.
Barisan Nasional: A Malaysian political coalition founded in 1973, dominated by UMNO and in government until 2018. It expanded the Alliance model into the coalition that sustained UMNO-led rule for decades.
Abdul Razak Hussein: Malaysia’s second prime minister, who led the country from 1970 to 1976 and served as UMNO president. He consolidated UMNO’s post-1969 position and launched the New Economic Policy.
May 13 incident: A wave of interethnic violence in Kuala Lumpur in May 1969 that led to emergency rule and a major political reset. The crisis weakened the Alliance government and preceded UMNO’s reorganization of national politics.
Onn Jaafar: A Malay politician who founded UMNO in 1946 and served as its first president. He organized the movement against the Malayan Union and led UMNO’s early development.
Ketuanan Melayu: A political doctrine asserting the special position and political primacy of Malays in Malaysia. The doctrine shaped UMNO’s claims to represent Malay political interests.
Mahathir Mohamad: A Malaysian politician who served as prime minister from 1981 to 2003 and again from 2018 to 2020. His long leadership transformed UMNO and his 2018 break with it preceded its electoral defeat.
Malaysian general election, 2018: Malaysia’s 14th general election, in which the Barisan Nasional coalition lost power for the first time. The result ended UMNO-led federal rule after more than six decades.
Federation of Malaya: A federation formed in 1948 that replaced the Malayan Union and became independent in 1957. UMNO helped negotiate the federation that replaced the union it had opposed.
Article 153 of the Constitution of Malaysia: A constitutional provision assigning the Yang di-Pertuan Agong responsibility for safeguarding Malays’ and Sabah and Sarawak natives’ special position. UMNO governments invoked this provision in debates over affirmative action and Malay rights.
