Undead

The undead are beings understood to have returned from death or to persist in a deathlike state. Vampires, zombies, and revenants are recurring examples.

Zombie: A reanimated corpse, often depicted as mindless or compelled to serve another. The zombie embodies undeath as bodily reanimation without ordinary agency.
Vampire folklore: Traditional beliefs and stories about blood-drinking beings who return from death. These traditions supplied many features later associated with the undead vampire.
Night of the Living Dead: George A. Romero's 1968 horror film about the dead rising and attacking the living. The film established a template for modern cinematic zombie outbreaks.
Resurrection: The return of a dead person to life, especially in religious belief. Resurrection often implies restored life, unlike the diminished or unnatural state of the undead.
Vampire: A folkloric or fictional being that sustains itself by consuming blood or vital force. The vampire persists as an active, often intelligent being despite being classified as dead.
Slavic folklore: The folklore traditions of Slavic peoples, including beliefs about restless dead and revenants. Regional accounts of returning dead helped shape later European undead lore.
The Walking Dead: A comic-book series by Robert Kirkman about survivors in a zombie apocalypse. Its long-running aftermath shows undeath as a test of community and survival.
Immortality: The condition of living forever or being exempt from death. Immortality prevents death, while undeath begins with death or resembles it.
Revenant: A dead person believed to return bodily from the grave, often to trouble the living. The revenant links undeath to the dead person's return and unfinished business.
Haitian Vodou: A religion originating in Haiti, with roots in West and Central African traditions and Catholic influences. Zombie traditions were shaped by colonial histories and beliefs associated with Haitian Vodou.
