Undecane

Undecane is a straight-chain alkane with the molecular formula C₁₁H₂₄. Its eleven carbon atoms form an unbranched chain.

Alkane: A saturated hydrocarbon containing only carbon–carbon single bonds. Undecane is an unbranched member of this hydrocarbon family.
Conformational isomerism: The existence of molecular arrangements that interconvert by rotation around single bonds. Undecane’s carbon–carbon single bonds allow many chain conformations.
Kerosene: A liquid petroleum distillate composed mainly of hydrocarbons with roughly ten to sixteen carbon atoms. Undecane falls within the carbon-number range of many kerosene components.
Decane: A straight-chain alkane with the molecular formula C₁₀H₂₂. Decane has one fewer carbon atom than undecane.
Carbon–carbon bond: A covalent bond joining two carbon atoms. Single carbon–carbon bonds connect undecane’s eleven atoms in a chain.
London dispersion force: An intermolecular attraction caused by temporary fluctuations in electron distributions. These attractions between undecane molecules influence its boiling point and liquid behavior.
Diesel fuel: A liquid fuel used in compression-ignition engines, commonly produced from petroleum distillation. Undecane can occur among the hydrocarbons in diesel-range fuel.
Dodecane: A straight-chain alkane with the molecular formula C₁₂H₂₆. Dodecane extends the same unbranched chain by one carbon atom.
Molecular formula: A notation that gives the number of each type of atom in a molecule. C₁₁H₂₄ records undecane’s carbon and hydrogen counts.
Boiling point: The temperature at which a liquid’s vapor pressure equals the surrounding pressure. Undecane’s boiling point reflects its size and intermolecular attractions.
