Underground power line

An underground power line is an insulated electrical conductor buried beneath the ground to transmit or distribute electric power. Its cables require specialized insulation, joints, and heat management because soil limits access and cooling.

High-voltage cable: An insulated cable designed to carry electrical power at high voltage. Underground transmission commonly uses these cables, whose insulation must withstand intense electric fields.
Electric power transmission: The bulk transfer of electrical energy from generating stations to substations. Underground cables can carry transmission power where overhead routes are impractical or restricted.
Overhead power line: An electrical conductor carried above ground on poles or towers to transmit or distribute power. It is the principal alternative, usually cheaper to build and easier to inspect than buried cable.
Electric power system: A network of generators, transmission equipment, distribution infrastructure, and loads that supplies electrical energy. An underground line is one component within this interconnected system.
Power outage: A temporary loss of electrical service to a location or area. A buried cable fault can interrupt service while crews locate and repair the damaged section.
Cable insulation: A nonconductive layer that prevents current from escaping an electrical conductor. Its dielectric strength and aging determine how safely the buried conductor can operate.
Electric power distribution: The delivery of electricity from substations through local networks to customers. Buried lines are widely used to distribute power in dense neighborhoods and developed areas.
Gas-insulated line: A high-voltage conductor enclosed in a grounded metal tube and insulated by pressurized gas or a gas mixture. It can carry power through confined spaces without using conventional buried cable construction.
Electrical conductor: A material or object that permits electric charge to move through it. The conductor carries current while surrounding insulation separates it from soil and other conductors.
Street excavation: The removal of soil or pavement to install, expose, or repair underground infrastructure. Cable installation and repair require excavation that can disrupt traffic and other utilities.
