Understory

The understory is the layer of vegetation beneath a forest’s canopy, including shrubs, young trees, herbs, and other plants. Its light, moisture, and temperature conditions differ from those above.

Forest canopy: The upper layer of tree crowns that intercepts sunlight and shapes conditions below. It forms the understory’s ceiling and controls much of the light reaching it.
Forest light environment: The distribution and intensity of sunlight within a forest, shaped by canopy structure and gaps. Light availability is a key constraint on understory growth.
Forest regeneration: The renewal of a forest through the establishment and growth of new trees. Many future canopy trees begin as seedlings in the understory.
Tropical rainforest: A warm, high-rainfall forest with dense vegetation and high biological diversity. Its layered vegetation creates shaded understory habitats beneath a tall canopy.
Forest stratification: The vertical organization of vegetation into distinct layers within a forest. The understory is one layer in this broader vertical arrangement.
Shade tolerance: A plant’s ability to survive and grow under low-light conditions. It helps explain which species can persist beneath dense crowns.
Understory bird: A bird species that chiefly forages or nests in the lower vegetation of a forest. Dense understory vegetation provides feeding and nesting habitat for these birds.
Boreal forest: A high-latitude forest dominated by cold-adapted conifers and long winters. Its short growing season and conifer canopy shape a distinctive understory.
Canopy closure: The degree to which tree crowns cover the sky when viewed from below. It helps determine how much light reaches understory plants.
Treefall gap: An opening in a forest canopy created when one or more trees fall. The sudden increase in light can trigger understory growth and recruitment.
