Unguligrade

Unguligrade locomotion is a way of walking in which an animal bears its weight on the tips of its toes, enclosed by hooves. It lengthens the limbs and is characteristic of horses, cattle, and other hoofed mammals.

Ungulate: A hoofed mammal belonging to one of several evolutionary lineages, including even-toed and odd-toed ungulates. Unguligrade locomotion is the characteristic stance of many hoofed mammals.
Digit: A finger or toe, composed of bones and associated tissues. Unguligrade animals bear their weight on the ends of their digits.
Horse: A large domesticated odd-toed mammal with a single functional hoof on each foot. The horse is a familiar example of an animal that walks on one hoofed toe per limb.
Mammalian locomotion: The ways mammals move using their limbs, bodies, and specialized anatomical structures. Unguligrade stance is one form within the broader range of mammalian movement.
Digitigrade: A form of locomotion in which an animal bears weight on its digits while its heel remains raised. It places weight on the toes without enclosing them in hooves.
Phalanx: A bone of a finger or toe. Phalanges form the digits whose tips support an unguligrade animal.
Cattle: Domesticated bovines with cloven hooves and a four-chambered stomach. Cattle bear weight on the tips of two principal toes on each foot.
Cursoriality: Anatomical and behavioral adaptations for sustained or rapid running. Unguligrade limbs often accompany running adaptations, but toe-tip stance and cursoriality are not identical.
Plantigrade: A form of locomotion in which an animal bears weight on the soles of its feet. It contrasts with unguligrade stance, where only the toe tips meet the ground.
Carpus: The group of bones forming the wrist in four-limbed vertebrates. The corresponding front-limb joint is often raised well above the ground in unguligrade mammals.
