UNICEF

UNICEF is a United Nations agency that works in more than 190 countries and territories to protect children’s rights and support their health, education, nutrition, and safety.

Child immunization: The administration of vaccines to protect children from infectious diseases. UNICEF procures and delivers vaccines and supports immunization programs worldwide.
United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration: An international organization that provided relief and rehabilitation after World War II. Its postwar relief work formed part of the context in which UNICEF was created.
James P. Grant: An American public-health official who served as UNICEF executive director from 1980 to 1995. Grant led UNICEF during expanded campaigns for child survival and immunization.
Expanded Programme on Immunization: A World Health Organization program launched in 1974 to make routine vaccines available to children worldwide. UNICEF has been a major procurement and delivery partner in global immunization efforts.
United Nations Development Programme: A United Nations agency that works to reduce poverty and support sustainable development and governance. Unlike UNICEF’s child-centered mandate, UNDP focuses broadly on development and institutions.
Community-based management of acute malnutrition: An approach that identifies and treats acute malnutrition in communities, including outpatient care for many children. UNICEF supports screening, treatment supplies, and community care for children with acute malnutrition.
Ludwik Rajchman: A Polish physician and public-health advocate who helped establish UNICEF. Rajchman proposed a United Nations fund for children after World War II.
Carol Bellamy: An American public official who served as UNICEF executive director from 1995 to 2005. Bellamy led the agency as children’s rights and education became prominent priorities.
GOBI-FFF: A child-survival strategy promoted in the 1980s, focused on growth monitoring, oral rehydration, breastfeeding, immunization, and related measures. UNICEF helped popularize this package of practical interventions against child mortality.
World Health Organization: A United Nations specialized agency that directs and coordinates international health work. WHO sets global health guidance; UNICEF often helps deliver health services and supplies for children.
