Union of Burma

The independent Burmese state established on 4 January 1948, when British colonial rule ended. It became the Republic of the Union of Burma in 1974.

Panglong Agreement: A 1947 agreement between Aung San and leaders of several frontier peoples, promising autonomy and cooperation in an independent Burma. Its promise of unity shaped the political settlement inherited at independence.
1947 Constitution of Burma: The constitution that established Burma as a parliamentary republic with a federal structure and provisions for state secession. It defined the Union’s institutions and the contested terms of membership.
U Nu: A Burmese politician who served as prime minister during much of the parliamentary period after independence. His governments led the Union through its first decade of elected rule.

State Peace and Development Council: The military government that ruled Myanmar from 1997 to 2011 under this official name. Its junta rule contrasts with the Union’s initial parliamentary republic.
Japanese occupation of Burma: Japan’s military occupation of Burma from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. The occupation weakened British control and transformed Burmese nationalist politics.
Karen conflict: An armed conflict between the Burmese state and Karen nationalist forces that began in 1949. The rebellion exposed how quickly the Union’s promise of national unity fractured.
