Union of the Crowns

The 1603 accession of James VI of Scotland to the English and Irish thrones as James I. It placed three kingdoms under one monarch without uniting their laws or parliaments.

Elizabeth I: Queen of England and Ireland from 1558 to 1603, the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty. Her death without an heir opened the succession that brought James to the English throne.
Personal union: A relationship in which two or more states share a monarch while retaining separate institutions. It describes the constitutional arrangement created when James inherited multiple crowns.
Union of England and Scotland: The political union of the Kingdoms of England and Scotland established by the Acts of Union 1707. It completed a parliamentary union that the shared monarchy of 1603 had not achieved.
