Union of Utrecht

The Union of Utrecht was a 1579 alliance among northern Dutch provinces and cities, formed during the Dutch Revolt. It became the constitutional foundation of the Dutch Republic.

Dutch Revolt: A revolt in the Low Countries against Habsburg rule that began in 1568 and led to Dutch independence. The Union formalized cooperation among rebel provinces during this conflict.
States General of the Netherlands: An assembly representing the provinces of the Low Countries, which coordinated policy and later governed the Dutch Republic. The Union assigned shared affairs to deliberation among the allied provinces.
William the Silent: The prince of Orange who led the Dutch revolt against Spanish Habsburg rule. He supported cooperation among provinces while resisting Spanish authority.
Twelve Years' Truce: A 1609–1621 suspension of hostilities between Spain and the Dutch Republic during the Eighty Years' War. Spain's acceptance of a truce marked de facto recognition of the Union's republic.
Pacification of Ghent: A 1576 agreement among provinces of the Habsburg Netherlands to expel Spanish troops and pursue political cooperation. Its breakdown exposed divisions that the northern provinces addressed through a separate alliance.
Dutch provincial estates: Representative assemblies of nobles, towns, and other estates that governed individual Dutch provinces. Provincial estates retained authority over local matters under the alliance.
Jan van Nassau: A German count and brother of William the Silent who helped organize the Union of Utrecht. He was a leading negotiator and promoter of the alliance.
Peace of Münster: The 1648 treaty ending the Dutch Revolt and securing Spanish recognition of the Dutch Republic. It confirmed the independence of the polity built on the Union.
Treaty of Arras: A 1579 agreement through which southern provinces reconciled with Philip II of Spain. Its southern signatories took the opposite political path from the Union's northern allies.
Dutch Republic: A confederation of Dutch provinces that existed from the late sixteenth century until 1795. The Union's cooperative framework became the republic's constitutional basis.
