Unionist Party

The Unionist Party is a Guatemalan political party founded in 2002 by former president Álvaro Arzú and his allies. It has been associated with conservative politics and support for Guatemala City’s municipal leadership.

Álvaro Arzú: Álvaro Arzú was a Guatemalan politician who served as president from 1996 to 2000 and as mayor of Guatemala City. He founded the party in 2002 with political allies.
Óscar Berger: Óscar Berger is a Guatemalan politician who served as president from 2004 to 2008 and as mayor of Guatemala City. His political coalition competed with Arzú’s party for conservative voters and national office.
Guatemala City: Guatemala City is the capital and largest urban center of Guatemala. The party’s strongest and most sustained political base has been the capital’s municipal government.
National Unity of Hope: National Unity of Hope is a Guatemalan political party founded by Álvaro Colom and Sandra Torres. It became a dominant national electoral force that the Unionist Party did not match.
Guatemalan National Advancement Party: The Guatemalan National Advancement Party was a political party that supported Álvaro Arzú’s 1995 presidential campaign and government. Arzú’s earlier party provided the political network from which the Unionist Party emerged.
Roberto González Díaz-Durán: Roberto González Díaz-Durán is a Guatemalan politician associated with the Unionist Party and its mayoral campaigns. He became one of the party’s prominent candidates for Guatemala City mayor.
