Unipedalism

Unipedalism is locomotion or support using a single leg or foot, either temporarily or as an animal’s usual mode of movement. It includes both brief one-legged balance and habitual single-limb locomotion.

Bipedalism: Locomotion using two legs, characteristic of humans and many other animals. Alternating support between two legs differs from relying on one at a time.
Flamingo: A long-legged wading bird known for resting while standing on one leg. Its familiar resting posture is a clear example of sustained unipedal support.
Locomotion: Movement that carries an organism from one place to another. Unipedalism is a particular way locomotion can be supported and produced.
Quadrupedalism: Locomotion primarily using four limbs for support and movement. Four-limb support contrasts with unipedal movement's single supporting limb.
Center of mass: The point at which a body's mass can be treated as concentrated for analyzing motion. Keeping this point over the support foot is central to one-legged balance.
Kangaroo: A large marsupial that moves mainly by hopping on its powerful hind legs. Its hopping gait includes moments when one hind foot supports the body.
Limb: An appendage attached to an animal's body, such as an arm, leg, wing, or fin. The term concerns how a leg or foot functions as support or propulsion.
Tripedalism: Locomotion or support using three limbs. It occupies an intermediate limb count between one-legged and four-legged support.
Postural control: The regulation of body position and stability during standing or movement. It coordinates adjustments that keep the body upright over one supporting limb.
Hopping: Locomotion in which repeated leaps are made with takeoff and landing on the same foot or feet. Single-foot hopping is a dynamic form of unipedal locomotion.
