Knowra UNITA UNITA The National Union for the Total Independence of Angola is an Angolan political and military movement founded by Jonas Savimbi. It fought for independence from Portugal and later waged a long civil war against Angola’s ruling MPLA.
Jonas Savimbi : Angolan political and military leader who founded UNITA and led it until his death in 2002. His leadership defined UNITA’s organization, strategy, and public identity.
Angolan Civil War : The 1975–2002 conflict between Angola’s government and armed opposition movements, chiefly UNITA. UNITA was the principal insurgent force opposing the government during much of the war.
Mobutu Sese Seko : President of Zaire from 1965 to 1997, known for his authoritarian rule and regional influence. Mobutu supported UNITA and provided a crucial regional ally during the Angolan conflict.
Angolan general election, 1992 : Angola’s first multiparty election, held in September 1992, in which the MPLA won the legislative vote. UNITA rejected the results and returned to war after Savimbi disputed the presidential tally.
Angolan War of Independence : The 1961–1974 armed struggle against Portuguese colonial rule in Angola. UNITA emerged during this conflict as one of several liberation movements.
Guerrilla warfare : A form of irregular warfare using small, mobile forces, ambushes, and attacks on an adversary’s infrastructure. UNITA used mobile insurgent tactics against the government’s larger conventional forces.
Apartheid South Africa : The South African state under white-minority rule from 1948 to 1994. Its military and material support strengthened UNITA as South Africa opposed the MPLA government.
Angolan general election, 2008 : The first Angolan legislative election since the civil war ended, won decisively by the MPLA. UNITA contested the election as a legal opposition party after disarming and losing its leader.
MPLA : The Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola, which became Angola’s ruling party after independence. UNITA’s rivalry with the MPLA shaped the independence struggle and the civil war.
Jamba, Angola : A town in southeastern Angola that served as UNITA’s headquarters during the civil war. From Jamba, UNITA maintained a political center and military base in territory it controlled.
