Unitarian Universalism

Unitarian Universalism is a liberal religious tradition that affirms the worth of every person and draws on diverse religious and secular sources. In the United States, its denomination formed in 1961 through the merger of Unitarian and Universalist bodies.

Unitarianism: A Christian tradition that rejects the doctrine of the Trinity and emphasizes the unity of God. One of the two traditions whose American organizations merged to form the denomination.
First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia: A congregation founded in 1796 that became the first explicitly Unitarian church in the United States. Its founding marks an early institutional expression of American Unitarianism.
Unitarian Universalist worship: Congregational services combining practices such as readings, music, reflection, and communal ritual. Services bring diverse sources together without requiring uniform belief.
Creed: A formal statement of religious beliefs accepted as authoritative by a community. Unitarian Universalism generally does not require members to affirm one binding theological creed.
Universalism: A Christian tradition historically affirming that all souls will ultimately be reconciled with God. The other tradition whose American organization joined the 1961 merger.
Universalist Church of America: The national organization of American Universalist congregations before its 1961 merger with the American Unitarian Association. It entered the merger that created the present-day association.

Religious pluralism: The recognition that multiple religious traditions can offer meaningful accounts of truth and spiritual life. Its affirmation of diverse sources makes pluralism a defining orientation.
Unitarian Universalist Association: The North American denominational organization formed in 1961 by the merger of Unitarian and Universalist associations. It organizes congregations while leaving substantial theological freedom to individuals.
American Unitarian Association: A national organization founded in 1825 to unite Unitarian congregations in the United States. Its 1961 merger with the Universalist Church of America formed the denomination’s central association.
