United Methodist Church

The United Methodist Church is a Protestant Christian denomination formed in 1968 by the merger of the Methodist Church and the Evangelical United Brethren Church.

Methodism: A Protestant movement that grew from John Wesley’s eighteenth-century renewal movement within the Church of England. The denomination belongs to the wider movement shaped by Wesleyan theology and practice.
John Wesley: An eighteenth-century Anglican priest and theologian whose preaching and organizing gave rise to Methodism. His theology and societies shaped the Methodist tradition inherited by the denomination.

Wesleyan theology: A Christian theological tradition emphasizing grace, holiness, free response to God, and growth in love. Its account of grace and sanctification is a central inheritance of United Methodist belief.
Methodist Church (U.S.): A U.S. Protestant denomination formed in 1939 by the reunion of Methodist Episcopal churches divided over slavery and regional differences. It was one of the two denominations that merged to form the United Methodist Church.
United Methodist episcopal areas: Regional groupings of United Methodist conferences assigned to the supervision of a bishop. Episcopal areas organize the bishop’s oversight of conferences and congregations.
African Methodist Episcopal Church: An independent Black Methodist denomination founded in Philadelphia in 1816 under the leadership of Richard Allen. It shares Methodist roots but developed separately from the predominantly white Methodist bodies that merged in 1968.
