United Nations Emergency Force

The United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF) was a peacekeeping force deployed in Egypt and Gaza from 1956 to 1967 after the Suez Crisis. It was the first armed UN peacekeeping force.

United Nations General Assembly: The United Nations’ main deliberative body, in which every member state has one vote. The Assembly authorized UNEF after the Security Council could not agree on a response to the crisis.
Suez Crisis: A 1956 conflict in which Israel, Britain, and France attacked Egypt after Egypt nationalized the Suez Canal. The invasion prompted the UN initiative that produced UNEF.
United Nations Emergency Force II: A separate UN peacekeeping force deployed between Egyptian and Israeli forces after the 1973 Arab–Israeli War. Its later mission reused UNEF’s name but had a different mandate and followed a different war.
Multinational Force and Observers: An independent international peacekeeping organization that monitors the 1979 Egypt–Israel peace treaty in Sinai. The MFO took over monitoring duties in Sinai after the UN could not secure agreement for a follow-on force.
United Nations Truce Supervision Organization: A United Nations observer mission established in 1948 to monitor armistice agreements in the Middle East. UNTSO observers helped prepare the ground for UNEF’s deployment and served alongside it.
United Nations Emergency Force I: The first UNEF mission, deployed from 1956 until Egypt requested its withdrawal in 1967. This is the specific operation established in response to the Suez Crisis.
United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus: A UN peacekeeping mission established in 1964 to prevent renewed fighting between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. UNFICYP followed UNEF as an early example of armed UN peacekeeping.
North Atlantic Treaty Organization: A military alliance founded in 1949 whose members pledge collective defense. Unlike NATO, UNEF was a consent-based UN buffer force, not a collective-defense alliance.
Peacekeeping: The deployment of international personnel to help prevent or contain armed conflict, usually with the parties’ consent. UNEF helped establish peacekeeping as a distinct UN practice.
Lester B. Pearson: A Canadian diplomat and politician who proposed an international force to separate the combatants during the Suez Crisis. Pearson’s proposal helped shape the force that became UNEF.
