United Nations Operation in the Congo

The United Nations Operation in the Congo (ONUC) was a peacekeeping mission established in 1960 during the Congo Crisis. It became one of the UN’s largest and most consequential early operations.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 143: A 1960 Security Council resolution authorizing UN military assistance to the Republic of the Congo. It established ONUC and called for Belgian forces to withdraw.
Congo Crisis: A political and military crisis in the Republic of the Congo from 1960 to 1965, following independence from Belgium. The crisis prompted ONUC and determined the mission’s changing priorities.
