Secretary-General of the United Nations : The United Nations’ chief administrative officer, appointed by the General Assembly on the Security Council’s recommendation. Leads the Secretariat and directs its staff and operations.
United Nations : An international organization founded in 1945 to maintain peace, promote cooperation, and address global problems. The Secretariat is one of the organization’s six principal organs.
League of Nations Secretariat : The administrative organ of the League of Nations, the international organization that preceded the United Nations. Its international civil-service model informed the later UN administrative organ.
United Nations agencies : Specialized organizations within the UN system, such as the World Health Organization and International Labour Organization. Many have separate governing bodies and administrations rather than belonging to the Secretariat.
United Nations Department of Peace Operations : The Secretariat department that plans and manages United Nations peacekeeping operations. Coordinates much of the Secretariat’s support for peacekeeping mandates.
United Nations General Assembly : The United Nations’ deliberative organ in which all member states are represented. Approves the Secretariat’s budget and appoints the Secretary-General on the Security Council’s recommendation.
San Francisco Conference : The 1945 conference at which delegates negotiated and signed the United Nations Charter. The conference established the Secretariat’s place and responsibilities in the new organization.
United Nations system : The network of the United Nations, its funds, programmes, specialized agencies, and related organizations. It is broader than the Secretariat, which is only one part of the system.
United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs : The Secretariat office that coordinates international humanitarian response to emergencies. Shows how a specialized office organizes work across agencies and relief partners.
United Nations Security Council : The United Nations organ charged with primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. Its recommendations shape the appointment of the Secretariat’s chief and its resolutions generate operational mandates.
