United Nations

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 to promote peace, security, human rights, and cooperation among states.

United Nations General Assembly: The United Nations organ in which all member states have representation and vote on questions within its authority. It provides the organization’s broadest forum for debate and nonbinding recommendations.
Peacekeeping: A practice in which international personnel help contain conflict and support peace agreements, usually with consent of the parties. UN missions monitor ceasefires, protect civilians, and support political transitions.
League of Nations: An international organization established after the First World War to promote peace through collective security. Its failures shaped the design and ambitions of the United Nations.
World Health Organization: A United Nations specialized agency that directs and coordinates international public health work. It coordinates global health action as part of the UN system.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights: A 1948 United Nations declaration setting out a common standard of human rights for all people. It became a landmark statement of the rights the UN seeks to promote.
United Nations Security Council: The United Nations organ charged with primary responsibility for maintaining international peace and security. Its resolutions can authorize sanctions and, in some cases, the use of force.
United Nations Security Council resolution: A formal decision or recommendation adopted by the United Nations Security Council. Resolutions are the council’s main instrument for expressing decisions and imposing measures.
Dumbarton Oaks Conference: A 1944 conference where Allied powers developed proposals for the structure of a postwar international organization. Its proposals formed the basis for negotiations over the UN’s principal organs.
UNICEF: A United Nations agency that supports children’s health, education, protection, and welfare. It delivers programs for children in emergencies and development settings.
Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide: A 1948 treaty requiring states parties to prevent and punish genocide. Its adoption established a binding international framework against genocide.
