United Provinces

The United Provinces was a British Indian province, formed in 1937, that became the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh in 1950.

North-Western Provinces: A British Indian province established in 1836, encompassing much of the Ganges-Yamuna region. It was the principal predecessor of the United Provinces.
Government of the United Provinces: The provincial executive and administration responsible for governing the United Provinces under British rule. It exercised provincial authority within the constitutional framework established for British India.
Govind Ballabh Pant: An Indian lawyer and Congress leader who served as premier of the United Provinces and chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. He headed the province's Congress government for much of the 1930s and 1940s.
Partition of India: The 1947 division of British India into the independent states of India and Pakistan. Partition changed the political setting in which the United Provinces became part of independent India.
Oudh: A kingdom annexed by the British in 1856 and later administered as a province in northern India. Its merger with the North-Western Provinces created the United Provinces of Agra and Oudh.
Provincial autonomy: The transfer of substantial administrative and legislative authority from colonial governors to elected provincial governments. The 1935 reforms made this principle central to the province's government.
Jawaharlal Nehru: An Indian independence leader who became the country's first prime minister in 1947. His political career and Congress organizing were closely tied to the United Provinces.
Constitution of India: The supreme law of India, which came into force on 26 January 1950. The constitution established the republic in which the province took the name Uttar Pradesh.
United Provinces of Agra and Oudh: The British Indian province formed in 1902 by joining the North-Western Provinces with Oudh. This earlier name identifies the province before its 1937 renaming.
Legislative Assembly of the United Provinces: The elected lower chamber of the United Provinces legislature under British rule. It provided a forum for party competition and provincial lawmaking.
