Universal Flash Storage

Universal Flash Storage (UFS) is a JEDEC standard for flash-storage devices and their interfaces to electronic host systems. It supports high-speed, full-duplex data transfer and is used chiefly in mobile and embedded devices.

MIPI M-PHY: A high-speed serial physical-layer specification used for links between electronic components. UFS uses M-PHY lanes as the electrical and signaling foundation of its device-to-host link.
JEDEC: A standards-development organization that publishes specifications for semiconductor and memory technologies. JEDEC publishes the UFS specifications and defines interoperable device requirements.
Smartphone: A mobile telephone with an operating system, internet connectivity, and application software. UFS commonly stores operating systems, applications, and user data in smartphones.
eMMC: An embedded flash-storage standard combining memory and a controller in one package. UFS generally offers higher performance and full-duplex transfers than the older eMMC interface.
MIPI UniPro: A layered protocol specification for transporting data between components over a physical link. UniPro carries UFS commands and data above M-PHY and manages link-level communication.
Embedded MultiMediaCard: A JEDEC standard that combines NAND flash and a controller in an embedded storage package. eMMC is an earlier embedded-storage interface that UFS was designed to advance.
Automotive infotainment system: An in-vehicle computing system for media, navigation, communication, and related functions. UFS provides embedded storage for data-intensive vehicle systems and software.
Secure Digital: A family of removable flash-memory card standards and interfaces. SD cards target removable storage, while UFS is primarily an embedded device interface.
SCSI: A family of standards defining commands and interfaces for connecting and controlling storage devices. UFS adopts SCSI command concepts to let hosts request storage operations.
Full-duplex communication: Communication in which two endpoints can transmit and receive simultaneously. UFS supports simultaneous bidirectional transfers, unlike half-duplex storage interfaces.
