Universality class

A universality class is a set of systems that share the same large-scale behavior despite differences in microscopic details. Its members exhibit the same critical exponents and scaling laws near a phase transition.

Renormalization group: A framework that studies how a system’s description changes as its length or energy scale changes. Its scale transformations reveal which microscopic details matter near criticality.
Phase transition: A change between distinct states of matter or phases as conditions such as temperature or pressure vary. Universality classes most often organize behavior near continuous phase transitions.
Ising model: A model of interacting binary spins on a lattice, used to study magnetism and phase transitions. Its critical behavior defines a widely studied class in two and three dimensions.
Mean-field theory: An approximation that replaces interactions with an average effective field and neglects spatial fluctuations. It often predicts exponents that differ from the true class below the upper critical dimension.
Critical exponent: A number describing how a physical quantity approaches a singular limit, often near a phase transition. Shared critical exponents are a principal signature of membership in one class.
Critical point (thermodynamics): The endpoint of a line of liquid–gas coexistence, where the two phases become indistinguishable. Its divergent fluctuations and scale invariance provide a canonical setting for universality.
Two-dimensional Ising universality class: The critical scaling behavior shared by two-dimensional systems with Ising symmetry and short-range interactions. It provides exact critical exponents and a clear example of class membership.
First-order phase transition: A phase transition involving a discontinuous change in an order parameter and latent heat. It generally lacks the diverging correlation length and critical scaling central to standard classes.
Scaling law: A relation describing how a quantity changes when the system’s characteristic scale changes. Common scaling laws express the large-scale behavior that defines a class.
Correlation length: A distance over which fluctuations in a system remain statistically related. It diverges at a continuous critical point, allowing microscopic details to recede.
